Transnational social protection infrastructures: African migrants in Mexico

Abstract In the past years, increasingly restrictive migration policies have pushed many migrants to seek new and more risky routes. Many studies investigated aspects of social protection for from Global South in industrialized countries North, with powerful welfare states. Yet, such focus has failed understand complexities during process, where people often spend uncertain periods time transit state is frequently absent. these contexts, predominantly provided by third sector (TS) informal networks both nationally transnationally. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted African TS organizations Mexico, this paper explores different semi‐formal relationships between TS, state, that result complex transnational infrastructures cover migrants' basic needs.
